How is the Required Minimum Bandwidth Calculated for a Competition?

Modified on Fri, 27 Jun at 6:50 PM

On the "Streams" section of the arena dashboard within SportsHub you can see the bandwidth required for each competition.

To learn more information about the arena dashboard you can read the following article:

The required bandwidth is linked to the stream configuration of the competition. And more specifically to the bitrate parameter.

To learn more about stream configurations please read the following article:

https://support.synergysports.com/support/solutions/articles/77000582074-configuring-or-editing-streaming-configurations

In the stream configuration page, you will notice that the bitrate value is displayed in kbps (kilobits per second). If you want to know what the value is in Mbps (Megabits per second), you will have to divide the former (kilobits) by 1000.

Each stream can be sent out twice from the venue, once to a remote SRT or RTMP server and once to the Synergy application. Both streams will have the same bitrate and hence the total bitrate for this stream is 2x the bitrate defined on the page.

Example: if you select a bitrate of 3500 kbps for the main stream, you will have defined a RTMP endpoint and video to the Synergy applications (SportsHub) that is enabled, then the total bitrate consumed will be 7000 kbps = 7 Mbps.

This adds up for all streams defined for the competition. To get the total bitrate required you have to add up the bitrate required for all streams.

ExampleLet's say you have 2 streams defined in your competition:

  • One with a 3500 kbps bitrate and both an RTMP endpoint and streaming to the Synergy applications is enabled. The required bitrate is 7000 kbps.
  • One with a 4000 kbps bitrate, no RTMP endpoint and streaming to the Synergy applications is enabled. The required bitrate is 4000 kbps.

The total bitrate required would be 7000 kbps + 4000 kbps = 11.000 kbps = 11 Mbps.

To ensure there is no problem in your arena, we recommend that the average bandwidth at your arena should be at least 20% above the required value.

Friendly Reminders

  • The average bandwidth is calculated over the last 3 days. This means that if your server had a drop with your Internet connection it will impact the way the bandwidth is reported to MyArenaFor example, it will stay red for 3 days even though the Internet has been back for 2 days.
