This article will show you how to build the RAID configuration on an HPE Proliant server using HPE Smart Storage Administrator. Other servers might have a slightly different process.
This will be a necessary process when the server can not boot anymore and the message below is displayed:
Preparation
Make sure you have the following items below:
- VGA monitor
- Mouse
- Keyboard
Plug the monitor into the server’s VGA connector (the blue connector). It is located in the back of the server.
Plug the mouse and keyboard into any free USB port the server has.
1. Reboot or Power on the Server
Reboot or power on the server from the server’s front panel.
2. Launch Intelligent Provisioning
This is one of the fastest ways to get to HPE SSA (Smart Storage Administrator) leads through the HPE Intelligent Provisioning menu. During system POST phase press F10 to launch Intelligent Provisioning.
3. Access the HPE Smart Storage Administrator
In the HPE Intelligent Provisioning menu select the option titled "HPE Smart Storage Administrator" – you have only 15 seconds to achieve this, so try to be as quick as possible, otherwise you will be redirected to the default option:
The below picture presents the HPE Smart Storage Administrator GUI main screen:
The example here uses a P440 controller. Other servers may be equipped with different controllers, i.e. B140. Since they are all managed by HPE SSA, the procedure of array configuration should be the same for each controller.
4. Create RAID 1 Storage Array in HPE SSA
On the HPE SSA main screen click on the array controller.
In the Smart Array Actions menu, choose the Configure option.
Click on the Create Array button.
The example below uses two hard drives but it’s still the same process with a single one.
In the RAID level section, ensure that RAID 1 (or RAID 0 if it is the only available option) has been chosen. You can leave the remaining parameters at their default values. Click on the Create Logical Drive button to create RAID 1 array.
Look over the summary screen to verify the newly created array and click on the Finish button.
The new array should now appear in the left pane of the main HPE SSA window.
5. Exit the HPE Smart Storage Administrator
Click on the X button to exit the application and then you will be redirected to Intelligent Provisioning screen. On the Intelligent Provisioning screen click on the Power Button in the upper right corner to reboot the server. If you do not see this button, you can reboot the server by powering it down and back up again using the button on the server's front panel.
